How long have you been making music?
I have been musical since leading bass guitar and harmonica at age 12 (I’m now 40)

What/who inspired you to get started in music?
Many influential artists from different Genres. Sage Francis and KRS ONE are two of my biggest rap influences. Nick Cave, Sonic Youth, and Ryan Adams as singer influences for me.

Tell us about some of the highs and lows of your career so far?
It’s always a thrill for me to perform live music in any setting. A decade ago I was the singer in a folk Duo called the Frog Prince and in our first year together we won a talent contest in Fairview for a couple original tunes and our cover of Five Days in May by Blue Rodeo.

Tell us about your experience making your first song.
Hard to define what my first song actually was, but when I decided to really learn to play a six string guitar (at age 26) I stayed very close to the Key of D and wrote what’s possibly my first original song as a solo artist. The song is called Dexedrine and it’s a favourite for people who know me to play for them as it’s humorous and insightful about my personality.

What are you currently working on?
Currently I am in a creative space with my rap group Cake Mob and looking at forming an independent record label (Cake Mob Records) with my rap partner Dave-E and our newest member Object Frank from South Africa. We are something of a proxy group with Frank living on another continent and a few of our collaborators being from the US and Britain. We have been invited to play at a music festival in Minnesota USA next February. And we plan to do a few surprise gigs in our province this summer with the permission of the towns Such as Yarmouth, Halifax, and Dartmouth Nova Scotia. Perhaps even as far as Montreal.

Our music is available for free in episodes of my Podcast called GottaJob, which is available on Spotify, Anchor, Apple, Amazon, Google and Overcast Podcasts. As well as our website www.cakemobrecords.com

What’s something you love to do outside of music?
I actually love my job as a traffic control person. And I’m a single father to a wonderful 2 year old son who is the light of my life. We read and jam every day for fun and sharing my love of music with him. He finds the equipment and instruments fascinating and it makes me so happy to see him showing such interest in something that has been such a big part of my life.
